SIERRA CLUB COFFEE

Fernandina Beach Commissioner Joe Gerrity will participate in the Jan. 24 “Commissioners & Conservation Coffee” sponsored by the Nassau Sierra Club.  It will be held from 9 am to 10 am at the Kafé Haus on Sadler Road in Fernandina Beach.

This series of events with county and city officials is designed to provide an opportunity for the public to discuss environmental and conservation issues and open a continuing dialogue between the public and elected officials on concerns about preserving the natural beauty of Nassau County, conserving open space, obtaining funding to protect sensitive land and other issues.

For further information about the program, contact Bob Weintraub at 491-6817.

Proponents say change would give people more say in decisions .

marcia.lane@staugustinerecord.com
PALATKA -- A suggestion to turn Putnam County into a charter government and make commissioners more responsive to the people picked up steam at Saturday's Rally for the Rivers in Riverfront Park.

The charter government concept was introduced at Friday's rally kickoff by Palm Beach lawyer Lesley Blackner who represents a statewide organization, Florida Hometown Democracy. The group is pushing a statewide referendum on giving more control over proposed land-use changes in their communities back to the local electorate.

Blackner reiterated her pitch on Saturday. "If people are living in non-charter counties, they're totally at the mercy of the County Commission. There are no mechanics for recall or overturning an ordinance," she said.

The city of Palatka already is a charter government.
